What’s the best way?
I’ve been told I need a MAC code from my internet provider to switch to the other…

Cancel your subcribtion with Virgin and call the internet service provider that you want and switch. As simple as that.
You cancel with Virgin and call up another provider in your location.
Well you might want to just buy a wireless router and wireless modem. It would save you the hassle of canceling virgin, then finding a new provider and the installation.
First, I would contact Virgin and tell them you want a wireless router and that you will change your Internet Provider if you have to in order to have one for free. They might just provide one free for you to keep you as a customer.
If that doesn’t work try an online search for ISP’s in your area.
As above
if virgin will not give you wireless ask them for a MAC CODE,then decide which provider you wish to go to,give the new provider your MAC CODE and leave them do the rest.
The new provider will then send you all you need to get on the internet as you were before.
Make sure you are not held into any contract with your existing provider or you will have to pay them the remainder of the term,eg if you signed a 18mth contract at £15 per month and you still have 6mths remaining you will have to pay them £90 to get out.
By getting the MAC CODE you should not lose your connection and the swap to your new provider should be seamless if you do not get the mac code you will have to wait for virgin to remove the marker on your line which takes up to 10days before you can arrange your new suplier then your new supplier will take up to another 10 days to sort out your new broadband.
Good luck
